This portrait really sums up Tom much more than the photograph did. By deleting the superfluous background and concentrating on a close-up creates a much stronger portrait. Often, as the saying goes, ‘less is more’, but drawing a portrait using few colours and strong shapes to capture the essence of the personality can be difficult. We had to zoom in on details that give the correct impression, so the original photo needed to be well lit and in focus.
